Day 108

Published:

Editor’s note: the remainder of Washington was very strenuous and required hiking into the evening most days to meet my mileage goals, so most nights I opted to sleep for the thirty or so minutes that writing a good blog post requires. Thus, with a few exceptions, the remaining posts are recollections with a focus on the photographs.

We woke up early today because, after the two downhill miles to connect back up with the PCT, we had a lot of vertical gain ahead of us. The day started out misty but soon burned off, making our long climb to Cathedral pass pretty hot.

Cathedral peak was stunning from both sides, and after lunching and drying off at the top, we were rewarded with a chill descent through a wide valley filled to the brim with marmots. There began the next climb, which would keep us busy until quitting time. Lots of huckleberries on the way up, so an excuse to break was always there for us. We camped just after Piper Pass at Mile 2452.1, where we were disturbed late at night by Pilgrim, a hiker I hadn’t seen since Ashland, stomping around and swearing to himself.
